Special Feature: Finalist – World Wildlife Photographer of the Year 2016
Photo by: Lance van de Vyver (Finalist, Category: Black & White)
Camera: Canon EOS 5DS R Lens: 500mm F4
ISO: 1600
Shutter: ?
Aperture: F4
Description:
In the Tswalu Kalahari Private Game reserve, Lance tracked a pride of lions that discovered a Temminck’s ground pangolin at a water hole. By rolling up into a ball the pangolin is normally safe from big cats, but in this case the lions did not let up, rolling the poor creature around like a soccer ball. Every time the lions lost interest in their prey, the pangolin would uncurl and attempt an escape, thereby attracting the lion’s attention again. After 14 hours the pride moved off. They left the pangolin relatively unscathed. Unfortunately the poor creature did not make it, probably due to stress and too many hours in the heat of the sun.
October 2016, Week 4: Lionesses on the Road
Camera: Nikon D7200 Lens: Nikon 200-500mm
ISO: 1000
Shutter: 1/80sec
Aperture: F 6.3
Chélee’s Description:
These 3 girls recently joined us from another game reserve and understandably where nervous of the vehicles and viewing was tough. Got my guests up early one morning and off we went on our mission to find these girls. Picked up their tracks on a road and we followed and as we rounded a corner they where walking straight towards us. Having to reverse, stop, take photos, reverse again. It was magical. These are absolutely stunning girls and they demanded all the attention.
October 2016, Week 3: Leopard in Tree

ISO: 1600

Annemarie’s Description:
This leopard was feeding on a kill in a very dense tree in Kruger National Park for 2 days. All we could see was the tail and an impala leg hanging down. We visited this site 3 times…hoping to see more of the leopard, but no… As it was getting dark during the last 30 minutes before gate closing time, we didn’t expect much, but we decided to visit the sighting for a last time. …and what a surprise!!! My first sunset leopard ever…overlooking his Kruger-kingdom with a full belly! This photo was taken from my vehicle with camera resting on a bean bag.

October 2016, Week 1: Eric and the Lion
Photo by: Anton van Loggerenberg. Photo of: Eric Ubisi. Permission: Tinstswalo Lodge
Camera: Canon Powershot SX40 HS
Iso: 400
Shutter: 1/125s
F-Stop: F/5.6
Focal Length: 36 mm
Description:
On 18 July David Jacobs, a ranger from Tinstswalo, and tracker Eric Ubisi, took a guest of the lodge on a game drive when they came upon three young Mbiri lions. As they positioned themselves to have a good view of the pride, the lions got up and approached the vehicle. One lay down behind them, thereby preventing the vehicle from backing away. Another went around to the front, right past Eric’s lookout chair. Anton van Loggerenberg (a Honeyguide ranger) captured the moment perfectly when the lion stood next to Eric.
